Solar Assisted Heat Pumps (SAHP)

In traditional air source heat pumps, significant amount of electrical power is required for the heating operation in winter due to the low COP. In addition, since evaporator operates at low temperatures, compressor experiences "over-heating", which causes premature components wear.

EET is investigating the feasibility and practicality of integrating solar energy into a Heat Pump (HP) for space cooling, heating and hot water. The solar energy is of interest for three reasons. First, it leads to reduction of fossil fuels consumption. Second, solar energy is a non-pollution source of energy. Third, it is renewable. The SAHP is an efficient system that can provide conditioned air and hot water by using the solar energy to achieve more than 30% improvement in HP system's efficiency in winter.

The outcome of this project will be the development of an energy efficient space conditioning system using solar energy which can add value to Nations energy and environmental strategy.

The target market for EET's solar powered HP will be small applications, in the range of 10 to 50 kWs.
